Overview Shady Part of Me:
Shady Part of Me sends you on an emotional and dream-like journey, with breathtaking artistic direction and the enthralling voice of Hannah Murray (Game of Thrones, Skins). As a little girl and her shadow, overcome emotional struggles through surreal dreamscapes across a touching narrative filled with twists and surprises. Both must learn, cooperate and evolve to progress in a poetic journey. This is one of those games that will make you question yourself what’s the point of growing up? just to lose yourself in the reality, forget that you used to remember your dreams, your favorite toys, your purest emotions. Instead of job, money, responsibility. It will make you feels like you living through your childhood once again. You might think I’m just exaggerating, and maybe you’re right, but at least, that’s my true experience with the game. A recent highly rated “helpful” negative review said that the puzzles get repetitive. I didn’t find this to be so, at least not enough to suck the joy out of the game. Up until the very last act, the game is introducing new elements to how puzzles work in every act. Granted, there’s a lot of box pushing and experimenting to figure out how all the elements are going to change the shadows, and it would have helped if what was going to happen had been more obvious. But I generally found the puzzles engaging and did not find them routine or repetitive near the end. The puzzles kept getting harder with a steady progression, and the new mechanic for the final act really kept it fresh. And the rewind mechanism (vs dying and starting over at a checkpoint) makes experimenting very quick and easy.
Shady Part of Me Pre-Installed:
This is a great short story, a bit more symbolic and allegorical than your typical game. It’s basically Sadako, but wholesome and with a fear of light. The shadow acts like a platformer, while the girl acts as if you’re in a puzzle setting. The two got together really well. The rewind mechanic helps if you make a mistake. You can rewind as far as you want, too. The puzzles are mindbending, but each mechanic is introduced in a way that’s easy to understand I didn’t like the ending much but the rest of the game was absolutely incredible and touching. I have dealt with depression most of my life, many of those thoughts were relatable. It also made me think of someone that I’ve lost to depression not much time ago, he’d struggle to ask for help and accept it. He’s alive though, our relationship didn’t make it, lol But I believe he’ll heal and find himself just like the MC did. Thank you for this game, I needed it. It has a place in my heart now.
